History in Ogden
 
Ogden is a small suburb area just north of Wilmington. Ogden can be considered the area between Gordon Road north approximately 5 miles and to the west until reaching Murrayville Road. Highway 17 North/Market Street will lead you straight through the Ogden area. Ogden is a quaint little sub-sector of Wilmington filled with people who love the area. Homeowners in this area enjoy the proximity to Mayfaire Town Center, Wrightsville Beach and Porter’s Neck. Ogden is only approximately 5 miles North of Landfall and about 7 minutes from Scotts Hill Loop Marina. Ogden has been an important area that has lots of history to Wilmington and other surrounding areas. Ogden once had two important railroad stops. One of the stops was at the corner of Gordon Road and Hwy 17/Market Street called “Baymeade.” What is now known as Middle Sound Loop Road was home to the “Seven Mile Post” stop. One of the most important arteries to Ogden is via Military Cutoff Road. Many people don’t realize that road was once a trail and became a road because of the need to get artillery and military trucks to the port with our efforts in World War II. The cutoff road made a shorter route for the military trucks to travel and helped in the avoidance of Market Street.  Historically, Ogden was sparse in developing and most of the land was originally owned by a handful of families. Over the years, Ogden has increasing become an area known and desired for residential purposes.
The Water in Ogden
Water access in & around Ogden however if you are lucky enough to live in around Middle Sound Loop you are surrounded by water. Middle Sound area eastern side faces the Intracoastal Waterway. Pages Creek to the north and Howe Creek to the south. The first Ogden Marina was Harrelsons Marina now known as Middle Sound Loop Marina. In the past year, it has been beautifully restored through the building of new docks and boat slips. Another unique landmark in the Middle Sound Loop area is The Jeba County Store. The small building and old fashion grocery store in operation since the 1920’s. This little spot is great for boaters and fishermen needing to pick up just one more item without having to travel up to Market Street to the closest convenient store.  The Middle Sound or Middle Sound Loop area is home to many great communities and subdivisions like Queen’s Point, Demarest Landing, Providence, Timber Creek, Gorman Plantation, South Point, Glen Arbor, North Hills and Emerald Forest. Many new communities have recently become available in the Middle Sound Loop area like Anchors Bend, Mason Landing Yacht Club & Natures Walk. Raw land to build on in Ogden is still available however everyone has known for years the value of short proximity to Wrightsville Beach and the scarcity of land available near water.
The Activities in Ogden
Of course, Ogden is home to many great little stores such and retail shops but for the athletic types there is a great facility known as Ogden Park. Ogden Park is 120 acres with access from both Market Street and Gordon Road. The park is home to many softball, baseball, football and soccer fields. The park has picnic tables and playgrounds making this a great location for summer birthdays and gatherings. During the summer months the surrounding communities can hear the crack of the ball against the bat and the distant cheers from the crowd. Just around the corner from the park is Wilmington Ice House which is an indoor ice skating rink featuring public skating, lessons, camps, figure skating and hockey. Ogden has great spaces for bicyclist and runners as well.  Many surfers in the Ogden area either surf at Wrightsville Beach, Masons Inlet or Figure 8 Island. Some homeowners in the Ogden areas take advantage of the water sports or simply go boating for their recreational fun with the area offering several places with boat slips available for quick access to the waterway. Regardless of what your taste or idea of enjoyment is… Ogden has great activities for its residence.  
The Atmosphere in Ogden
Many residence of Ogden enjoy the proximity to everything that the city of Wilmington has but enjoy being outside the city and having quick access to Jacksonville via Highway 17 North and I-40 via Gordon Road. Ogdenites really don’t have to go into Wilmington for the essentials. Four grocery stores and several gas stations in the Ogden Area there really is not a need to travel into Wilmington however the close proximity to Wrightsville Beach is a plus. Ogden is home to Lewis Strawberry Farm just off of Market Street on Gordon Road. During the summer months many locals enjoy the experience of picking their own strawberries or sampling the homemade ice cream. Wilmington is growing and like any growing city, eventually more retailers and communities will pop up in Ogden as a result.
The Real Estate in Ogden
You can find homes ranging in value in the Ogden area.  Affordable housing found in many neighborhoods like Jacobs Ridge, Holly Field, Alamosa Place and many others. Many builders have begun to accommodate those who love the Ogden area with new construction neighborhoods like Palm Grove, Garrlington Heights, Carrington Woods and Courtney Pines. The oldest house in the Ogden area is off of Middle Sound Loop Road, specifically on Dunbar Road. The home is located on 35 acres and many historians believe the Reuben Everett house was built in 1830. This is one of the largest antebellum plantations that have survived in New Hanover County. The house has changed hands a few times but has been lovingly been remodeled and cared for. Drive around Middle Sound Loop Road and you just can’t miss it. Ogden Real Estate is varied with beautiful waterfront properties as well as many houses great as starter homes and/or investment properties. Bayshore and Bayshore Estates are very popular in the Ogden area. The neighborhood includes many different style homes but the majority is brick ranch style with homeowners enjoying the access to the community boat ramp with no home owners’ dues. Marsh Oaks is another very desirable community in the Ogden area. Marsh Oaks features a community pool, tennis courts and a very active home owners association. Many people love the vibe of Marsh Oaks and are known for its homeowners really dressing up their front porches and most having warm and wonderful curb appeal. Prices throughout Ogden can range from anywhere from $40,000 to over 2.8 million. As the land available in Ogden become less available, the prices (especially on the water) will continue to be go for a premium as many people enjoy being slightly outside of town. Many properties in Ogden have larger lots and offer the homeowners within those communities to have additional privacy which can be harder to find in the city limits of Wilmington.
