These gardens were begun in 1901 and are part of a 640 acre land grant that was given to the Ogden brothers in 1735 and changed hands several times in the years following. In 1901 Sarah Jones began the gardens and in 1906 commissioned a famous German landscape architect to transform them into a work of art. Much has changed in the Arlie Gardens area since those early days, due to natural disasters such as hurricanes. However in 1948 the Corbetts purchased the Arlie Gardens land from the Jones family, and the Corbetts would open the gardens several seasons a year to the public. This set the stage for the current public attraction that is Airlie Gardens as we know it today. The Jones family sold the Airlie Gardens land to New Hanover County in 1999 and this area is currently undergoing restoration. It is one of the last remaining bastions of undeveloped landscape along Bradley Creek.
